A point-of-sale that closes the till and the ledger in the same system.
The challenge
Retail operators run a till at the counter, stock control in a spreadsheet and accounts at the accountant's office. Every one of those is a separate version of the same day's trading, and month-end is where the three versions are argued about.

Outcomes
How we shipped it
Accounting is not an add-on
Accounts, account types and reporting were built as first-class modules rather than an export to a separate package, so a sale at the counter and the entry in the ledger are the same record seen twice.
Locations before features
Multi-location business and stock handling shaped the data model early. Adding a second branch to a POS that assumed one is a migration, not a setting.
The counter has to be fast
Barcode handling, cash register state and shift management are the parts an operator touches hundreds of times a day, so they got the attention that the reporting screens did not need.
